Everything you need to know about hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is a molecule with many benefits for the skin! If it is naturally present in the skin tissue, our capital is depleted over the years. Thus, the use of treatments based on hyaluronic acid is ideal to give a real youthful boost to mature skin. What are the effects of hyaluronic acid on the skin? How to use it ? Veld's tells you all about hyaluronic acid.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a molecule naturally present in our body . Discovered in 1934 by two German researchers, Meyer and Palmer, this component of the skin has surprising properties. Resulting from the combination of a uronic acid and an aminoglycan, hyaluronic acid is the most hydrating molecule available to the body :it can retain up to 1,000 times its weight in water.

Housed in the dermis, hyaluronic acid has a sort of “sponge” effect. This molecule gorges itself with water, thus filling the spaces between the cells and the skin tissue. We also speak of “skin cement”. This cement is the key element that will give tone to the skin, for a fresh complexion and smooth skin.

Unfortunately, the production of hyaluronic acid by the body decreases over time, which is partly the origin of skin aging. It is estimated that about 6% of hyaluronic acid is lost each year , which means that at 50, we have already lost half of our capital in hyaluronic acid. To fight against the signs of aging, there are now several cosmetic or surgical procedures based on hyaluronic acid.

What are the effects of hyaluronic acid?

The beneficial effects of hyaluronic acid on the skin are numerous and no longer need to be proven:

  • Hydration:the main property of hyaluronic acid is undoubtedly its moisturizing power. Treatments based on hyaluronic acid provide deep hydration of the epidermis, and above all, long-lasting. Since hyaluronic acid retains water in the skin, it is plumped, comfortable and soft for the whole day.
  • Skin tone:when the skin is waterlogged under the effect of hyaluronic acid, the features are tightened, the skin tissue is smoothed, the "crumpled and tired" appearance of the skin is lost . It regains tone and firmness.
  • Luminous complexion:when the skin is healthy, nourished and hydrated, the complexion follows suit! Thanks to the antioxidant action of hyaluronic acid, the complexion is unified and regains radiance, for an immediate healthy glow effect.
  • UV protection:hyaluronic acid plays a key role in protecting the skin against ultraviolet rays. First of all, because it strengthens the hydrolipidic film of the skin which protects it against attacks, but also because its antioxidant content helps protect the epidermis from UV rays.
  • Anti-aging effect:of course, when we talk about antioxidants, the anti-aging effect is never far away! The antioxidants contained in hyaluronic acid help fight against the production of free radicals, responsible for skin aging. The strong moisturizing power of hyaluronic acid also plumps up the skin, to fight against the loss of firmness, fill in wrinkles and prevent the appearance of new wrinkles.
  • Soothing and healing:the hyaluronic acid naturally contained in the skin actively contributes to the healing of the skin, when we have a small wound or irritations. Hyaluronic acid is therefore an active ingredient that is ideal for sensitive skin, which will be soothed and protected.

What are the different uses of hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a molecule that can be incorporated into different types of care. It is thus found in cosmetics, but also in injection, or even in food supplements. Each approach has its pros and cons:

Cosmetics with hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is a molecule particularly present in the world of cosmetics. It is often incorporated into day creams. When you apply the cream, with your fingertips in a small circle, the hyaluronic acid will penetrate the skin tissue. The skin is thus hydrated, plumped, smoothed, with a fresher complexion. Ideal to have a good base before you make up! For a higher concentration of hyaluronic acid, you can also bet on a mask, to be left on once a week. At Veld's, we have developed the Age 2 Deep Hydration Mask O based on hyaluronic acid, ideal for strengthening the hydrolipidic film of the skin and regaining firmness! Finally, hyaluronic acid is ideal for moisturizing and plumping sensitive areas such as the eye contour or lips. That's why we created the Age Commando lip volumizing treatment based on hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid injections

Performed by a beauty professional, injections are another way to benefit from the effects of hyaluronic acid. The advantage? The most intense and long-lasting effect. By injecting hyaluronic acid directly into the dermis, it is possible to fill in wrinkles, even well-established ones, and restore the skin's original firmness. By the time the acid wears off naturally, you can see the effect of the injections for up to 6 months. As for side effects, while complications are very rare, some patients may have an allergic reaction. Results ? Hematomas, irritation and itching, the appearance of granulomas under the skin which sometimes require taking cortisone or anti-inflammatories. Do not hesitate to seek advice and take the time to discuss with a professional before you start. Please note, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, hyaluronic acid injections are contraindicated.

Food supplements

If you are prone to dull complexion and your skin lacks suppleness, food supplements based on hyaluronic acid are a good solution. The capsules will recreate the natural stock of hyaluronic acid contained in the skin, to restore its suppleness, and unify the complexion for a healthy glow effect. That being said, the capsules will not allow to play on the wrinkles already installed.
