Everything you need to know about sustainable fashion

More and more people are opting for sustainable products. In addition to numerous beauty and care products that are produced sustainably, there is an increase in the number of sustainable fashion brands. Discover now everything you need to know about sustainable fashion.

What is sustainable clothing?

The moment clothing is made with attention to and preservation of people, animals and the planet, it may bear the sustainable fashion label. This is, of course, briefly explained what it is all about. It actually concerns the following core values:

  • Animal-friendly production and products
  • Respect for human rights
  • Good working conditions
  • Materials that have less impact on the environment

By the way, this fashion is far from boring. It only says something about the materials used and the production itself and nothing about the design and the colors used.

Animal-friendly and respect for human rights

With regard to animal-friendly products and production, you can think of the use of vegan leather, for example. No animal leather is used. This does not only apply to leather, by the way. Other animal products are also avoided as much as possible.

Entire books can be written about the observance of human rights. Unfortunately, most clothing still comes from Asian countries, where working conditions are downright bad.

Child labor is more the rule than the exception, as are low wages and very long working days. Budget brands and shops in particular market clothing whose production takes place under very poor working conditions. Compliance with human rights also leaves much to be desired.

Materials with less impact on the environment

There is a lot involved in the production of clothing. For example, a lot of water is wasted and environmentally unfriendly materials such as polyester, elastane and synthetics are involved. Substances that are not biodegradable and for which oil is used. Fortunately, more and more companies are switching to sustainable fabrics and materials, such as organic cotton, bamboo, hemp and tencel (eucalyptus). These are all examples of sustainable materials that are becoming increasingly popular. The same goes for recycled materials.

In addition to the fact that these fabrics limit the impact on the environment, they are also very comfortable. It is much better for your body to wear natural materials that have been treated as little chemically as possible.

Brands that are sustainable

There are various brands that produce nothing but sustainable clothing and footwear. Brands such as Ecoalf, Zign, Anna Field and, for example, Even &Odd are taking the lead and producing sustainable fashion for the fashion-conscious woman (and man). This also applies to brands such as Nudie Jeans and Kings of Indigo.

More and more big brands are switching to sustainable products

Not only clothing brands are making the switch to sustainable production. The same goes for shoe brands. Brands are increasingly opting for non-animal materials, which means, for example, that leather shoes are made from vegan leather. Furthermore, recycled materials are used. A good example of this are the Adidas Clean Classics, which are still very recognizable in terms of shapes and colours, but are now produced sustainably.
