After a sunburn, it's common to see your skin start peeling. Have you ever wondered what's really happening beneath the surface?
When your skin burns, it reddens and swells slightly as a protective response. As the swelling subsides, the skin feels looser, allowing the damaged outer layers to naturally shed.
Even without a full burn, frequent summer sun exposure can mildly irritate your skin. As it relaxes, the epidermis sheds more quickly. Hard water, prevalent in much of the Netherlands due to high lime content, can also dry out your skin faster, leading to flaking from dryness.
Hydration is key to preventing excessive shedding. Drink plenty of water for internal moisture and apply after-sun lotion, moisturizer, or shea butter after every shower (keep them short and use lukewarm water). Instead of rubbing, gently pat your skin dry with a towel.
