How to Hem Pants Perfectly: 2 Reliable Methods – Sewing or Iron-On

Sew a Trouser Hem in 6 Easy Steps

With years of tailoring experience, I've perfected this foolproof method for a professional finish. Start by gently removing the existing hem using a seam ripper or small scissors. Try on the pants with your everyday shoes to set the ideal length, then pin the fold evenly around the bottom. Remove the pants, turn them inside out, and press the fold flat with an iron.

Measure 4 cm above the pressed fold, mark with chalk, remove pins, and trim the excess fabric. Re-pin securely. Thread a needle (or your machine) with thread matching the pants' color. Sew a blind hem stitch 1.5 cm from the fold, working all the way around until you return to the start. Knot the thread securely and cut. Repeat for the second leg – your pants will look tailor-made.

Quick No-Sew Hem with Iron-On Tape

For a fast, durable alternative without sewing skills, iron-on hem tape is a game-changer I've relied on countless times. You'll need scissors, glass-headed pins, and an iron. Trim the pants to your desired length, leaving a 4 cm allowance. Fold and press the hem with the iron.

Open the fold, place the iron-on tape flat against the wrong side of the fabric, then refold over the tape. Press firmly with a hot iron (check fabric settings) for 25 seconds. Allow it to cool completely without disturbing. It's ready in under 5 minutes and holds up wash after wash.
