High-Flavonoid Chocolate Doubles Sunburn Protection, Study in Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology Finds

Scientists have discovered that chocolate enriched with high levels of the antioxidant flavonoid can help shield skin from sunburn, according to research published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.

The study involved 30 participants split into two groups: one consumed high-dose flavonoid chocolate, the other standard chocolate. After 12 weeks, the high-dose group demonstrated double the protection against burns compared to the control group.

Flavonoids occur naturally in chocolate but are often lost during the heating process. The tested chocolate was specially made to preserve its full 660 mg of flavonoids.

A word of caution: Experts stress that chocolate is no substitute for proper sunscreen. It also contains unhealthy saturated fats and sugars. The manufacturer is working on lower-fat, lower-sugar versions.
