While most Dutch people still turn to dentists first, those who visit a dental hygienist often return satisfied with the results.
The dentist is a household name, but only 37 percent of the population (excluding those with dentures) reported experience with a dental hygienist in 2020.
Individuals who have seen a dental hygienist show less preference for dentists, especially for tartar and plaque removal and routine check-ups, viewing hygienists as a reliable alternative. These findings come from NIVEL's Consumer Panel on Healthcare, surveying over 3,000 adults aged 18 and older.
Well-maintained teeth
With Dutch people increasingly prioritizing healthy, well-groomed teeth—often keeping their natural teeth into later years—demand for professional oral care is rising.
NIVEL researcher Johan Hansen advocates for dentists and dental hygienists to co-locate, fostering better collaboration and task coordination in oral healthcare.
