Cryolipolysis: Harvard-Developed Fat-Freezing Treatment Targets Stubborn Fat

Yes, you can make stubborn fat disappear using cold. Cryolipolysis, a groundbreaking treatment developed by experts at Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital, uses a specialized machine to achieve this.

What does it do?
The Zeltiq machine freezes and destroys fat cells. While heat-based methods have long been used to reduce fat, researchers now confirm that cold is at least as effective—if not more so. Dermatologist David Goldberg explains: "We've been melting fat with heat for years, but now the opposite is even more effective." Clinical tests show one session can eliminate up to 25 percent of fat in areas like the stomach, hips, or back. Promising, isn't it?

A limitation: Larger areas like thighs or buttocks are harder to treat effectively. Scientists are actively refining the technology to address these zones soon.

How it works:
During cryolipolysis, all heat is extracted from the fat layer beneath the skin. Fat cells cool to 0 degrees Celsius and literally freeze, dying off while surrounding tissues remain unharmed.

Dermatologist David Goldberg, who has tested the device firsthand, notes that the body naturally eliminates the dead cells over time. Patience is key—visible results typically appear after two or three months.

Originally developed in the U.S., the treatment is now available in Great Britain. However, not everyone is convinced. London cosmetic surgeon Roberto Viel cautions: "It sounds logical and safe, but can the body handle disposing of all those dead cells? With significant fat destruction, the liver could become overloaded, potentially causing issues—especially for those with liver conditions. I'd advise against it in such cases."

Availability of Zeltiq in the Netherlands remains uncertain.
