Bleachorexia: The Dangerous Obsession with Perfectly White Teeth

A new entry in the realm of body image obsessions: bleachorexia.

As dental professionals, we're familiar with trends like tanorexia (the relentless pursuit of a deep tan) and anorexia athletica (compulsive over-exercising). Now, bleachorexia—an obsession with excessively whitening teeth—is on the rise.

The Amsterdam dental clinic Wit shared with De Pers that patients with bleachorexia return weekly. Their teeth are already white, yet they demand even brighter results.

The Dutch Society for the Promotion of Dentistry (NMT) urges caution: "Consult your dentist before whitening." Overuse can cause enamel degradation, leading to irreversible damage.
