Stricter Teeth Whitening Regulations Take Effect November 1, 2012

As of November 1, 2012, teeth whitening procedures in the Netherlands will face tighter regulations enforced by the Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA).

Professional Whitening at Dentists
For safe, professional teeth whitening resulting in a radiant smile, patients must visit a dental clinic. These clinics are now required to employ licensed dentists. Bleaching agents are limited to a maximum of 6% hydrogen peroxide—a significant reduction from the previous levels of 15%, 25%, or 35% used in some treatments.

Over-the-Counter Tooth Whiteners
Home-use whitening products available at drugstores or online remain accessible but are strictly capped at 0.1% hydrogen peroxide. This limit also applies to products used by beauty salons and independent dental hygienists. Compliance is monitored solely by the NVWA.
