Got multiple jars cluttering your bathroom counter—day cream, night cream, eye cream? As a skincare expert, I can tell you it often doesn't matter which you use. Here's the truth backed by research.
A Common Misunderstanding
A survey of 500 women revealed most believe day and night creams are essential. But cosmetic dermatology researcher Jetske Ultee disagrees.
Ingredients Are the Same
"We're fooled by marketing," says Ultee. "Checking ingredient lists, I can't distinguish day from night creams. Your skin needs the same ingredients at night as during the day."
Eye Creams and Serums?
Eye cream is just regular cream in a smaller tube, per Ultee. Serums? Think clear mushroom soup versus a creamy version—no major difference.
One Key Exception: SPF
The real distinction is daytime sun protection. Day creams rarely provide enough SPF or last through reapplication every two hours. Ultee advises: "Use a dedicated sunscreen instead."
