Are You Drying Your Hair Wrong? Expert Tips for Healthier Strands

After washing your hair, drying it seems straightforward—but common mistakes can lead to damage. As a hair care expert with years of experience, I've seen how proper technique preserves smoothness and strength. Here's how to do it right.

Rinse
Finish with a cold water rinse to seal the hair cuticles, promoting smoother strands that are easier to detangle and style.

Dry
Wet hair is highly fragile, so avoid vigorous towel rubbing, which roughens cuticles and causes porosity. Instead, gently squeeze excess water using light pinching motions. For even kinder treatment, wrap your hair in a soft cotton T-shirt.

Styling
Use a wide-tooth comb, starting from the ends and working upward to minimize breakage. Dominique Snip, owner of professional hair brand Sheado, recommends: 'Air drying with a leave-in conditioner is ideal. If blow drying, apply a heat protectant first, use the lowest heat setting, and hold the dryer about six inches away.'
