Master the Donut Bun Updo

Donut buns can be styled in various ways—sometimes with an actual hair donut, other times with just elastics and clips. Today, I'll share how I created Lotte's double donut bun using simple tools, drawing from my hands-on experience perfecting kid-friendly styles.

How to Make a Donut Bun Like Lotte's

Lotte wanted not one, but two donuts this time! My home donuts were a bit large for her fine hair, but we improvised beautifully with elastics and a clip.

Here's the simple process I followed:

  • Part the hair down the middle into two equal sections.
  • Leave out a front strand for a cute face-framing look.
  • Tie each side into a low pigtail with an elastic, Pippi Longstocking-style.
  • Add another elastic 5 cm from the pigtail ends.
  • Split the ends in two, roll the pigtail upward to form the bun, and secure with a clip or pin.
  • Repeat on the other side—done!

Top Hair Donuts for Effortless Updos

These affordable donuts (under $10) simplify stunning buns, even if DIY isn't your forte. I've tested the left and middle ones extensively—they hold up all day. Find them at Bol.com or your local drugstore.

How to Use a Donut in Your Hair

Technique varies by donut type:

  • Classic round donut (image 1): Ponytail through the center, spread hair over it, secure with elastic. Wrap ends around and pin. Best for shorter hair; trickier with long locks.
  • Middle donut (my favorite): Pull hair through the hole, slide to ends, roll upward like old-school curlers, and hook secure. Distribute hair evenly—stays put perfectly.
  • Number 3: Similar to #2—roll from the bottom. I've just ordered it and will update with tips soon!
