Water and makeup may not be the perfect pair, but is swimming with it truly detrimental to your skin?
Protective Barrier
Board-certified American dermatologist Dr. Jeannette Graf notes that wearing makeup while swimming isn't as harmful as commonly thought. It can even help: makeup acts as a thin shield between your skin and chlorine, which is notoriously drying and irritating.
Post-Swim Cleansing
Rinse your face with clean water right after exiting the pool. Allowing chlorinated water, dirt, or bacteria to dry on your skin can trigger irritation—swift cleansing prevents this.
SPF and Makeup Application
Always apply broad-spectrum SPF first, followed by makeup. After swimming, wash your face and reapply adequate sun protection. Makeup with minimal SPF isn't enough on its own.
