Ingrown hairs can cause significant pain and irritation. Discover proven strategies to prevent them and treat this common issue effectively.
Ingrown hairs typically occur after shaving or hair removal. As skin stretches over the cut hair, the new growth can curl back into the follicle instead of emerging through the surface. This results in an inflamed bump with the hair trapped beneath, known as an ingrown hair.

Experts advise leaving ingrown hairs alone when possible to avoid worsening inflammation. They may release naturally, but if not, soften the skin with warm water—such as after a shower. Gently tease the hair out using sterilized tweezers, then disinfect the area. If it persists or inflammation grows after a couple of weeks, consult a doctor.
