This is how you put together a capsule wardrobe

Although we often have dozens of items in our closet, we usually only wear a small portion of them. Something about the 80-20 rule. Moreover, not everything can be combined with each other and some items are very similar. Do you recognize this? Time for a capsule wardrobe!

What is a capsule wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is all about putting together a selection of boys' clothing essentials, which you can endlessly combine. Good for your wallet, but also for the environment. All the clothes in your son's closet will be worn a lot before he grows out of it.

Do you want to get started putting together a well-organized wardrobe for your son? A capsule wardrobe normally contains around 33 to 36 items per spring/summer and winter/fall. Underwear and basic undershirts not included. Spring and summer are counted as one season, as are autumn and winter. Tip:before you go shopping, check which items of clothing you can keep and combine in the closet. Or buy second-hand children's clothing online, which is sustainable and saves you money.

Capsule wardrobe example

For boys you can, for example, keep the following capsule wardrobe items in winter:

  • 2 chunky sweaters
  • 2 cardigans (or jackets with a zipper, which can be combined with a t-shirt)
  • 4 long sleeves
  • 4 pants (2 jeans, 1 dress pants, 1 jogging pants)
  • 2 long-sleeved blouses
  • 3 pairs of shoes (sneakers, dress shoes and wellies)
  • 1 winter coat
  • 1 raincoat

Good-for-the-environment-and-your-wallet

If your son regularly comes home with stains or tears in his pants, you can of course also opt for more pieces of clothing in the capsule wardrobe. And if you really miss something on the list, feel free to add it. When putting together a capsule wardrobe, it is mainly about thinking about what your child really needs. And that you are smart with the color palette. Compile a color palette per season and ensure that all clothing that will be on the shelf falls within this palette. This winter, for example, opt for neutral colors such as gray and white, alternating with warmer colors such as brown and terracotta. This way you can be sure that everything will match!

Before you run to the store to get those new essentials, we'd like to give you a few tips for choosing the right items:

  • See which items of clothing your son likes to wear right now. When shopping, consider the fabrics and style he likes. That way he can enjoy it the longest!
  • Only choose items for the capsule wardrobe that you can combine with at least four other items in the closet.
  • Go for quality garments. Your child will wear the items a lot, so it is important that they remain beautiful even after several washes.
  • Keep to the color palette that you have determined in advance.
