Should Young Girls Wear Bikinis? A Mom's Take on Body Confidence and Parental Worries

What’s your view? Should young girls wear bikinis or stick to one-piece swimsuits? Lately, there’s growing debate that bikinis on young girls might provoke inappropriate thoughts or harm their self-image by mimicking their bikini-wearing moms.

That’s a bold claim—let’s unpack it.

As a mom, I see young children naturally wanting to emulate their parents. My daughter loves dress-up games: high heels, bras, lipstick, often with friends. I find no issue with playful imitation—it’s how kids learn and build confidence.

In fact, seeing her strut confidently beside me in a bikini boosts her self-esteem immensely. I’ve moved past my own bikini-ready days, but that doesn’t diminish her joy.

Beyond that, why are we fretting over this? At 6 or 7, I roamed in just bottoms—no big deal. Supermodel Doutzen Kroes echoes this, sharing that her young daughter (now nearly 3) still wears panties at home or beachside during her bikini line launch. She’ll draw more eyes than most, yet it’s normalized.

Does a bikini truly invite harassment from creeps? Should fear dictate a one-piece? Honestly, if my daughter tries jeans and an undergarment top for dress-up at home, I explain it’s not streetwear. But a bikini for swimming or vacation? That’s practical.

Am I naive, or is this overblown? Let kids choose what feels right—prioritizing their comfort and self-assurance. What do you think?
