Unless you've been off the grid lately, you've likely noticed the Heelys craze sweeping through kids everywhere. Just recently, my daughter and I vacationed in sunny South Holland at a hotel popular with families, and even the older guests were charmed by these innovative wheeled sneakers.
Heelys – also known as roller shoes, wheely's, or heelies – are stylish sneakers equipped with small, discreet wheels embedded in the heels. Available in a rainbow of colors and styles, they feature one or two wheels that aren't obvious from afar unless you're in the know.
My daughter proudly owns what she calls the 'coolest Heelys ever' – and I agree they're built tough and worth every penny, despite the premium price. After months of persistent requests, I finally relented. As a parent, I believe in teaching patience, so making her wait reinforced how much she truly wanted them.
Ordered over the weekend, they arrived just in time for our Tuesday outing. From the moment they unboxed, she hasn't taken them off. Even on our beach walk and climbing adventures, she insisted on wearing them – smartly removing the wheels and inserting the included plugs for sandy terrain.
From hotel breakfasts to exploring Euromast, SS Rotterdam, and Rotterdam's vibrant Markthal, she glided everywhere on her wheels. To my younger son's envy (size 30 is too small for him next to his nearly 12-year-old sister), but no complaints from her. Remarkably, there were zero 'I'm tired' or sore feet whines – these shoes let kids cover miles effortlessly.
It's a win for parents too: she'll never want to leave them behind. Check out this short video of her first rolls. Fun fact: Events like Roll Fat in Amsterdam on May 16 are popping up for Heelys fans.
Ready to join the trend? I got ours from Rolschoen.nl, but they're widely available. Is your child already rolling, or are they next?
