Applying deodorant is a daily ritual for most of us—morning, evening, and even before workouts—to combat perspiration and odors. Yet, despite your best hygiene efforts, midday smells can still sneak up. The culprit? Often, it's your application method, especially with antiperspirant formulas.
Dermatologist Maral Skelsey advises against daily use of antiperspirant deodorants. "It is not necessary to use it every day and it is actually much better to use it only at night," she told Well+Good. Applying it before bed maximizes effectiveness. Think it's unhygienic? Not at all—the formula needs hours for its active ingredients to work, blocking sweat glands during your sleep for deep, lasting results that curb sweating.
Morning showers? No problem—the antiperspirant resists water. This nighttime routine applies only to antiperspirants; standard deodorants can be used daily or more if needed. Always apply to completely dry skin, covering the entire armpit area, and adjust frequency based on your product.
