Modest Fashion Exhibition: Pioneering Style, Empowerment, and Art at Stedelijk Museum Schiedam

Discover modest fashion, a burgeoning multi-billion-dollar industry blending contemporary design with art. Stedelijk Museum Schiedam is the first in the Netherlands to showcase this global phenomenon, featuring works by leading designers alongside thought-provoking contemporary art. This vibrant exhibition captures the spirit of the times, offering a visual delight that's both stylish and insightful.

These forward-thinking creations are fashionable yet modest, appealing to women worldwide—religious or not—who reject the 'aesthetics of the nude.' Once, the mini skirt symbolized feminism; today, it's about personal freedom and self-expression. Modest fashion transcends 'covered or not,' championing women's creativity and choice globally. Timed for the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage in the Netherlands and the first female city councilor in Schiedam, it celebrates empowerment.

Fashion Meets Art
Guest curators Rajae El Mouhandiz (singer, composer, filmmaker, and theater maker) and Alexandra van Dongen (freelance exhibition curator) masterfully paired fashion with art.

Expert designer Said Mahrouf selected standout pieces, including photos and videos from major brands and independents. Highlights range from Dubai's Bouguessa—with minimalist black-and-white designs evoking modern art—to colorful Chanel couture.

The curators also spotlight international artists exploring femininity, the body, and tradition. Experience performance art by Alicia Framis, photography from Aïda Muluneh, Newsha Tavakolian, and Meriem Bouderbala's kaleidoscopic visions. Many of these acclaimed artists, popular via social media outside Europe, debut in a Dutch museum here.

Visit until 9 February 2020.
