From April 18 to September 8, 2019, the Amsterdam Museum hosted Fashion Statements, a captivating exhibition delving into fashion's role in shaping identity across centuries. Featuring over 75 historical costumes from its renowned collection, each garment tells a story of personal expression or social commentary. Six leading contemporary designers—Karim Adduchi, Marga Weimans, Bas Kosters, Ninamounah, Art Comes First, and Patta—reinterpreted these timeless pieces through modern lenses, showcasing inspired designs alongside the originals to bridge past and present perspectives.
Fashion has always been a powerful medium for self-expression and societal critique. Our clothing choices reveal convictions, affiliations, or rebellions against norms—status through voluminous silhouettes, origins via fabric and color, or independence symbolized by the willow-hung corsets of 1890s women challenging conventions. From 18th-century wide-hipped dresses signaling prestige to early 20th-century innovations, these 'statements' remain relevant today, as the Amsterdam Museum's experts highlight through its collection.

This exhibition masterfully unites historical attire—from 18th-century garments to early 20th-century shoes—with cutting-edge streetwear and haute couture. Each of the 75+ pieces is contextualized to reveal its original message. The featured designers contribute short documentaries sharing their insights, while displaying three outfits each that echo historical themes with contemporary relevance. This dialogue fosters a profound connection between eras.
Fashion Statements was on view from Thursday, April 18, to Sunday, September 8, at the Amsterdam Museum.
