Museum Volkenkunde proudly presents 'Jewelry – Makers & Wearers,' the largest jewelry collection ever displayed in a Dutch museum. Featuring nearly 1,000 exquisite pieces from our collection, alongside contemporary works by renowned international designers, this exhibition offers endless inspiration, wonder, and appreciation. Beyond global adornment traditions, it delves deeply into the artisans, their masterful techniques, and the compelling personal stories of the wearers. Running from December 13, 2017, to June 3, 2018, at Museum Volkenkunde in Leiden.
Jewelry enhances beauty and carries profound significance. Yet, we often overlook the skilled makers and innovative techniques behind these treasures. This exhibition celebrates them as true artists. Ancient methods reveal insights into cultures, histories, and identities. Drawn from the collections of Museum Volkenkunde, the Africa Museum, and Tropenmuseum, highlights include intricate goldwork from Asia and South America, diverse natural materials from Oceania, silver pieces from North America and the Middle East, and vibrant African beadwork.
