One thing that never goes out of style is our passion for bold hair transformations—from brunette to blonde or rich caramel shades. As beauty enthusiasts, we crave colors that truly enhance our features. Celebrity colorist Rita Hazan, who styles A-listers, shares her expert advice in InStyle magazine: the best hair color is the one that complements your complexion. Here's how to find yours.
While skin tones vary widely, they fall into three undertone categories: warm, neutral, and cool. These subtle hues beneath the skin's surface guide your ideal shade. Rita Hazan recommends two simple tests.
First, check the veins on your wrist. Greenish veins indicate warm undertones; blue or purple ones suggest cool undertones; if they're colorless, you have neutral undertones.
Second, consider your sun response. Prone to sunburns? You have cool undertones. Tan quickly without redness? Warm undertones. Blush a bit but tan easily afterward? Neutral.
While personal preference rules, Rita advises matching color to undertones for a brighter, more radiant complexion. "Honey, golden, and caramel tones suit matte or darker skin, while lighter skin tones shine with icy blonde or platinum," she explains. For inspiration, look to celebrities or others with similar skin tones. Any color can work with personalization to your undertones.
