France's 2021 Summer Sales: Debate Rages Over Potential Postponement

Non-essential retailers across France reopened their doors on Wednesday, May 19, 2021, under strict health protocols including 8 square meters per visitor. This milestone has ignited a fierce debate among industry leaders: Should the summer sales be postponed? Two opposing viewpoints are emerging.

Like bars, restaurants, cinemas, and theaters, these businesses welcomed customers back, offering much-needed relief after prolonged closures. Now, traders are eyeing the next major event: the summer sales.

Pushing for a Mid-July Start to Summer Sales?

The official schedule sets the summer sales from June 23 to July 20. However, some advocate shifting these dates, following the precedent of the winter sales, which were delayed by two weeks. The Confederation of French Traders is leading this charge.

President Francis Palombi shared with RMC that they've sent a letter to the Ministry of the Economy requesting a postponement to mid-July. "We reopened on May 19—June 23 is too soon. Our model relies on profit margins, unlike franchises or big-box retailers," he explained. Palombi proposes a realistic start around July 10, giving independent shops more time to sell at full price post-lockdown.

Big Brands Advocate Keeping Original Dates

Not everyone agrees, particularly major brands. The Trade Alliance, in a press release, urges maintaining the initial timeline to "clear inventory and boost cash flow."

They also seek a two-week extension to accommodate early vacationers. This key issue could resolve soon: Minister for SMEs Alain Griset is scheduled to meet stakeholders this week, with a decision expected before month's end.
