High Fashion for Road Safety: 65 Designer Yellow Vests Auctioned for Charity

In a creative fusion of couture and public safety, 65 standard reflective yellow vests—mandatory in French vehicles since July 1, 2008—have been transformed by top designers. Proceeds from their auction will support the Prévention Routière association.

These vests, known for saving lives in roadside emergencies, gained fame through Karl Lagerfeld's iconic campaign: "It's yellow, it's ugly, it doesn't go with anything, but it can save your life." Now, fashion students Alison Vonthron from the Graduate Institute of Arts and Pauline Heude are elevating awareness with their "Yellow Work Art" initiative.

Volunteers including designers, gallery owners, and auctioneers collaborated to reimagine the vests. Brands like The Kooples, Chantal Thomass, Marithé + François Girbaud, and Stella Cadente turned them into bikinis, dresses, bags, hats, and even artworks.

The 65 couture pieces will debut in a Paris gallery before being auctioned to fund road safety efforts.
