Rietveld Academy Fashion Show is the annual presentation of the fashion department of the Amsterdam Gerrit Rietveld Academy. This year, from August 26 – 30, 2020, the department will present the new batch of graduated designers in a continuous multidisciplinary presentation in the gymnasium of the old academy building. In a setting that can be compared to an abstracted film set, a five-day performance takes place – an ever-repeating series of events that connects visitor and designer.
Central to Fashion Show 2020 are the graduation works of Irene Ha, Miladt (Milad Taheri), Idan Grady, Darwin Winklaar, Laura Fernández Antolín, Louise Gjessø and Javier Velasquez. Their varied and often groundbreaking visions question the status quo of the fashion discipline and with it the accompanying catwalk presentation. Head of department Niels Klavers:“Students want to commit to the crisis and look at the changes that this period brings about. With this presentation they show their environment after covid-19.”
Rietveld Academy Fashion Show 2020 presents the designers in a scripted space – a multidisciplinary intervention in which the graduates' work, performance and video are interwoven in an exhibition that also posits a scenario. The visitor witnesses repetitive dialogues, movements and interactions performed by actors. The scripts, based on the graduation theses and works, introduce the visitor in a surprising and intimate way to the work and world of a new generation of designers and artists.
