How to Protect Your Scalp from Sunburn: Proven Tips for Safe Sun Exposure

Even with a thick head of hair, your scalp can still get sunburned after a day in the sun. Here's how to protect it effectively.

1. Cover your head
The best defense is a hat or cap to shield your scalp. A scarf tied around your head works well too.

2. Use your hair as a shield
Sunburn often strikes through your hair parting. Avoid pulling hair back into a ponytail or braid. If parting, shift its position throughout the day.

3. Apply sunscreen
Don't skip the hairline. For at-risk scalps, apply directly to the parting—it may feel greasy but prevents worse damage. Try SPF hairspray, applied generously to partings. Sun-specific shampoos and conditioners are available; ask your hairdresser or drugstore.
