Viewing Diverse Vulva Images Boosts Women's Genital Self-Esteem, AMC Study Shows

Women who viewed images of vulvas in all shapes and sizes reported a more positive view of their own genitalia. This finding comes from research conducted at Amsterdam UMC (AMC). Many women worry about whether their external genitalia appear 'normal,' often influenced by digitally altered or surgically enhanced images in media, pornography, and fashion.

This pressure to conform likely drives the surge in vulvar surgeries, particularly labia reductions. Globally, around 95,000 such procedures were performed in 2015—a sharp rise from prior years. The Dutch Society for Plastic Surgery reports similarly increasing demand.

AMC researchers tested if exposure to photos showing a wide range of natural labia shapes and sizes could improve genital self-image. They showed 43 female students (average age 23) either vulva images or neutral ones depicting art, nature, and architecture. Satisfaction with their own vulva appearance was assessed before and after viewing. Those exposed to vulva photos showed significant improvements in self-perception, with effects lasting two weeks—regardless of their initial views. The neutral image group saw no change.
