Winter weather often leads to dry, cracked hands, flaky skin, and chapped lips for many people. While it might feel inevitable until spring, you can maintain soft, supple lips all year with proven, simple strategies.
Cold, dry air, sun exposure, and frequent lip licking are common causes of dry, cracked lips during winter. Recognizing these and other triggers is key to effective prevention and treatment.
Select lip balms, lipsticks, and treatments with nourishing ingredients like castor seed oil, ceramides, dimethicone, or mineral oil. Choose fragrance-free, hypoallergenic formulas. Steer clear of irritants such as camphor, menthol, or eucalyptus. Discontinue use if your lips burn, sting, or tingle.
Reapply lip balm throughout the day and at bedtime. For severely dry, cracked lips, opt for a thick ointment like petroleum jelly or cocoa butter, which locks in moisture more effectively than waxes or oils.
Before heading outside—even in winter—use a lip balm with SPF 30 or higher containing titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide. Reapply every two hours during exposure.
Drink ample water daily and use a humidifier at home, particularly in your bedroom overnight.
Licking dry lips may offer temporary relief but worsens the issue by stripping natural oils. Reach for a gentle lip balm instead.
Items like paper clips, jewelry, and metal straws can irritate sensitive lips.
Chapped lips are typically harmless, but persistent cases may signal an underlying condition. If symptoms don't improve after 2-3 weeks of these steps, consult your doctor.
