How Media, Filters, and Photoshop Perpetuate Unrealistic Beauty Standards

It's no surprise that so many women feel insecure about their appearance. Flip through a magazine or watch TV, and you'll see only flawless faces on covers and ads. Brands choose what fits their image—that's fair enough. What frustrates me, though, is the lack of balance.

How the Feminine Ideal Persists

We all play a part in upholding it. Think about those 'perfect' Instagram or Facebook posts. Filters here, a quick retouch there—who hasn't done it? Be honest: have you ever snapped a second photo because the first didn't capture you at your best? I have—and sometimes a third or fourth. I'm the queen of closed-eye shots or awkward expressions. Not very photogenic, especially as a blogger, but I'm grateful vlogging isn't my thing.

Photoshop: The Unavoidable Reality

Photoshop is everywhere now. Check the example image above to see a photo transformed. For a real-world case, read my blog about Lotte's school photo where her scar was erased without permission—I was outraged! How can I shield my daughter from these ideals when even school photographers alter reality?

Recently, I shared about a father of four daughters showcasing unfiltered family life on Instagram. It's refreshing and authentic, even if they retry shots for the best angle. No heavy editing—just real moments.

Contrast that with the billboard ad video above, where a model is digitally 'perfected' to sell an impossible ideal. It's disheartening, right?

Let's stand together, women: embrace your true selves and call out these manipulations. Share this message—help spread authenticity!
