With no protected designation like AOC or IGP, manufacturers worldwide can label any soap "Marseille soap." This has flooded the market with fakes from China, Turkey, and Tunisia. Over 80% contain animal fats, raising ethical issues and lacking the versatile benefits of genuine Marseille soap for skin, hair, face, and household use. Arm yourself with our proven advice to easily identify the real thing.
Real Marseille soap uses 100% vegetable oils, such as olive (sodium olivate), palm (sodium palmate), or coconut (sodium cocoate). Skip any with sodium lardate (pork fat) or sodium tallowate (beef fat)—these are fakes. It must be extra pure, with at least 72% oil, made only from water, oils, soda, and salt. Expect sodium palm kernelate, aqua, sodium chloride, or sodium hydroxide. No more than 6 ingredients total, and guaranteed free of perfumes, preservatives, or colorants.
Beyond ingredients, authentic Marseille soap has a signature cube shape weighing 600 grams. Olive oil versions appear green or brown; palm or coconut ones are white or beige. No dyes mean no purple, blue, pink, or yellow shades. Sides are stamped with the producer's name and mark. It carries only a subtle natural scent from its oils. Produced via traditional methods, or make your own for certainty!
