Dry Skin vs. Dehydrated Skin: How to Tell the Difference

Often, that tight feeling signals dehydration, which can affect normal, combination, or even oily skin. This mismatch explains why your routine might fall short.

Identifying Dry Skin

Dry skin stems from genetics: the epidermis produces insufficient sebum (unlike oily skin). It doesn't appear overnight. To distinguish it from dehydration, Well+Good recommends this test: Cleanse with a gentle product, wait one hour without applying anything, then observe. Tightness across the entire face (forehead, cheeks, chin) points to dry skin. Discomfort or mild itching suggests dehydration, which can fluctuate with your menstrual cycle and occur on various skin types.

Hydrating Your Skin Effectively

A top skincare mistake? Overdoing it, which dehydrates the skin. Skip harsh scrubs, acne-targeted products for occasional pimples, or sulfate cleansers that strip moisture. Instead, apply serums and moisturizers to damp skin for better absorption. Bolster the barrier with gentle cleansers. Select products matching your type: dry-specific if applicable; normal or normal-to-combination otherwise. Prioritize humectant-rich formulas with water as the first ingredient.
