Beanie Hat Hair: Expert Fixes for Flattened Roots and Prevention Tips

Why Does It Happen?

Typically, it's because we pull on the beanie over hair that's not fully dry—or ambient humidity does the job for us. Held in place, the strands take on the hat's shape: roots flatten, curls get crushed. Friction against wool generates static electricity, frizzing the lengths and making roots look even flatter.

How to Restore Volume

Without products, tilt your head forward and massage the scalp with fingertips to aerate roots and build lift. If needed, switch to McGyver mode: aim a hand dryer at your head while repeating the root massage. The ideal purse essential? Styling powder like Schwarzkopf's Dust It or Redken's Powder Grip 03—sprinkle at roots for texture and instant volume. Dry shampoo works well too, paired with gentle backcombing.

Can You Prevent It?

Yes! Prep beforehand with these two options (or both): 1/ Mist roots with styling water (like Camille Albane's Eau Texturisante) on damp hair, then blow-dry upside down. 2/ Spritz dry hair with a fixing spray (such as Franck Provost's Professional Fixing Spray). This locks in your style and reduces the hat's effect.
