How to Choose Safe Shampoo, Soap, and Body Products: Decoding Key Labels

Products labeled “hypoallergenic”

Despite common misconceptions, 'hypoallergenic' does not guarantee allergen-free products. It means the product was tested on at least 50 people with no adverse reactions reported—but there's no assurance it was tested on sensitive skin types.

Always check ingredient lists carefully and avoid products containing silicones, ammoniums, parabens, and sulfates, which can irritate skin.

"Dermatologically tested" products

This claim indicates testing under a dermatologist's supervision, which sounds reassuring. However, it lacks a standardized legal protocol, allowing brands to define their own criteria. European regulations ensure all cosmetics meet strict dermatological standards, so both labeled and unlabeled products comply. Note that 'tested' doesn't mean 'approved' by dermatologists.

“Allergen-free” products

These exclude the 26 substances officially recognized as skin allergens under European Cosmetic Regulations, with plans to expand the list to 80. Opting for this label helps protect your skin and prevent allergies.
