Hair Coloring FAQs #7: When Is Bleaching Essential and Can You Reuse Leftover Dye?

When Is Bleaching Mandatory?

There are just two key scenarios where bleaching is essential: 1) Achieving platinum blonde hair, which requires maximum oxidation to strip all pigments from the hair fiber; 2) Lightening or correcting oxidation-based color (see Hair Coloring FAQs #2). In all other cases, you can safely skip it.

Can You Save an Unfinished Hair Color Kit for Later?

It depends on the product. For oxidation coloring, mixing dye with oxidant triggers a chemical reaction that develops the final shade—apply immediately, as advised by David Merveille, Schwarzkopf consultant stylist. Leftover mixed product will dry out and lose its coloring power (though it's not unsafe). However, store unmixed portions of dye and oxidant tightly sealed for future use. This is ideal for targeting white hair: mix equal parts and apply precisely with a brush.

Some formulas, like L’Oréal Paris's Préférence Mousse Absolue in dual aerosol cans, keep colorant and oxidant separate until activated by pressing—no premixing needed.
