DIY Beauty Products from Kitchen Staples: Part 1

Olive Oil

Olive oil works wonders on fragile, brittle nails—apply one drop and massage gently. It also serves as an effective makeup remover, ideal for stubborn 'no-transfer' foundations. For a silky bath, mix it with a dollop of moisturizer before adding to warm water to avoid floating oil slicks. Blend with granulated sugar for a luxurious body scrub.

Salt

Mix flour (not too fine or coarse) with shower gel for a toning body scrub that boosts circulation and fights cellulite, or with lip balm for a gentle lip scrub. For ultimate relaxation, add sea salt to bathwater—evoking the stress-relieving beaches of Bahia while easing aches and pains.

Crystal Sugar

Master traditional sugar waxing: Combine 4 teaspoons water with an equal volume of sugar. Heat gently to a honey-like consistency, cool to body temperature, spread with a wooden spatula, apply a gauze strip, and pull against hair growth for smooth results.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Rich in potassium, sodium, iron, phosphorus, and magnesium, apple cider vinegar softens skin effectively. Add one cup to your bath for velvety results before a relaxing evening—no worries about attracting flies!

Chocolate

Chocolate uplifts mood and nourishes skin, as seen in popular spa cocoa treatments. Keep it simple: Stir unsweetened cocoa powder, like Van Houten, into hot bathwater for a decadent, skin-pampering soak.

Honey

A powerhouse antiseptic with nourishing, moisturizing benefits, honey is ideal for dry skin. For elbows, knees, lips, and heels, mix 3 tablespoons olive oil, juice of 1 lemon, and 1 tablespoon liquid honey. Shake, massage for 2 minutes, rinse, dry, and follow with your cream. For cracked heels like orange rind (not ideal for strappy sandals), apply honey at bedtime, wear socks, and rinse with mild soap in the morning before moisturizing. Use as a lip balm too. For puffy, dark-ringed eyes, mix 1 teaspoon acacia honey with ½ glass warm mineral water, soak compresses, and apply for 10 minutes.
