The Alopecia Project: British Photographer Captures the Raw Beauty of Bald Women

The Alopecia Project is a poignant photography series featuring men, women, and children living with alopecia—a condition affecting roughly 2 million women in France and 2% of the U.S. population. Often mistaken for chemotherapy side effects, alopecia primarily impacts healthy individuals, with only 5% experiencing total hair loss, including eyebrows and eyelashes.

Hair loss carries different weights for men, women, and children. For women, the disappearance of eyebrows and lashes—key elements of femininity—can deeply affect self-image and confidence, extending beyond the physical to emotional well-being.

Photographer Daniel Regan, inspired by meeting a woman with alopecia at a party, connected with others, listened to their stories, and captured their portraits: "For most, it was the first time being photographed without a wig by a professional," he shared with Huffington Post UK.

The series now lives in the book Alopecia Uncovered, showcasing these intimate portraits alongside personal narratives.

At its core, the project celebrates authenticity: true beauty lies in embracing the self you've chosen to be.
