Organic products are everywhere—from news headlines and TV segments to social media feeds. But why the surge in popularity? French consumers are prioritizing health-conscious choices, and this extends beyond food to beauty and hygiene. Organic cosmetics offer reassurance with their natural ingredients, better skin absorption, and gentler formulas that prioritize well-being.
The Rise of Organic Cosmetics
To explore French women's affinity for organic and natural beauty products, NUOO commissioned an Ifop study via self-administered online questionnaires from September 6-10, 2018, surveying 1,047 representative women aged 18+. We analyzed top products, price barriers, and demographics with Laure Friscourt, Ifop's Director of Beauty and Consumer Goods.
Organic Cosmetics Appeal Across All Ages
Women aged 50-64 led purchases in 2017 at 65%, but younger women aged 18-24 followed closely at 50%, driven by health concerns and environmental impact of conventional products. Natural cosmetics transcend generations, a recent shift fueled by natural ingredients.
Socio-Professional Trends: Executives Lead, But All Are Adopting
69% of buyers are executives or higher intellectuals, but adoption is spreading across all categories, as confirmed by Laure Friscourt. Awareness is now universal.
Political Leanings and Organic Cosmetics
Left-leaning women (80%) outpace right-leaning (60%), rooted in ecology focus—83% of Europe Écologie Les Verts supporters cite environmental preservation.
Top Products: Face, Body, and Hair Care
Face care (57%), face hygiene (57%), and body care (58%) dominate, as they're directly applied and skin-friendly. Hair products follow at 55%, boosted by expanding options. "Women's direct skin application heightens demand for reassuring organics," notes Laure Friscourt.
Why French Women Choose Organic Cosmetics
Top motivations: body care without chemicals (64%), proven efficacy (60%), and environmental protection (56%).
Barriers to Organic Cosmetics Purchases
Price tops at 63%, followed by naturalness verification doubts (46%) and perceived inefficacy (40%). Yet innovations—specialized formulas, clinical tests—rival conventional options, shifting mindsets.
