In the era of #nomakeup selfies showcasing impossibly flawless skin, the truth is that this 'natural' look often relies on subtle, layered makeup artistry. Drawing from the expertise of Miky, Lancôme France's renowned makeup artist, here are our 10 commandments for achieving that perfect, undetectable no-makeup glow.
Women today embrace a more natural aesthetic without sacrificing perfection. Makeup palettes have evolved into lightweight, layering techniques—inspired by Japanese mille-feuille—for a complexion that's both radiant and authentic.
Skin care is the foundation of flawless makeup
A true no-makeup look starts with pristine skin. Prioritize deep cleansing twice monthly, plus draining and plumping treatments. Nourish and massage to boost circulation for a refreshed glow. "The celebrities I work with undergo advanced in-cabin treatments to plump the skin, often paired with gluten- and dairy-free diets for reduced puffiness," shares Miky. Beyond supervised nutrition, consider acupuncture, pinching massages, or subtle fillers to enhance without overdoing it.

Layering: The secret to superimposed perfection
"Layering involves ultra-sheer products stacked for the illusion of bare skin with flawless results," explains Miky. Follow these 10 precise steps:
1. Hydrate dry skin
Moisturize thoroughly, then blot vertically along the face's central line (forehead, nose, nostrils, chin, lips) with a tissue.
2. Apply mattifying primer
Use a cream-gel primer, fingering it upward from chin and nose to forehead—skip cheeks to keep them dewy and youthful.
3. Layer liquid foundation
Opt for an ultra-fluid, fine formula for a glowy finish. Apply with a brush outward, under eyes, and from chin to jawline, always working upward.
4. Conceal strategically
Choose highly pigmented concealer; pat on with fingers or a fine brush, staying within dark areas.
5. Prime eyelids
Apply eyeshadow base to lids, wiping excess from folds with a cotton swab.
6. Reverse contouring
Tap a lighter-than-skin foundation in a triangle under eyes, nose wings (below cheekbones), between brows, chin, and lip hollows. Blend with a makeup sponge for seamless highlights. "Contouring plays with light and shadow," notes Miky.
7. Add chubby-cheek blush
Use cream-blush sticks, patted on for a fresh flush.
8. Lightly powder
Dust ultra-fine loose powder sparingly with a large brush on forehead, nose, and nostrils.
9. Define brows softly
Brush brows neatly; use a fine pencil in a light shade to correct imperfections.
10. Lengthen lashes lightly
Apply lengthening mascara sparingly, wiping excess with your finger for subtle tinting.
The result? A smooth, luminous complexion that reveals masterful technique. Enhance with tinted lip balm for the finishing touch.
