65% of Dutch Adults Aged 20-50 Skip Regular Skin Checks for Suspicious Spots, Research Shows

Nearly 65% of Dutch people aged 20-50 do not check their skin frequently enough for suspicious spots. What's more, over one in five have no idea what warning signs to look for during a self-exam.

These findings come from recent research by the Melanoma Foundation, which launched the #checkyourself campaign yesterday. Early detection of melanoma dramatically improves outcomes and survival rates.

Common Myths About Melanoma

  • More than a quarter (27%) wrongly believe using aftersun after sun exposure lowers melanoma risk.
  • Almost half are unaware that melanoma ranks in the top 3 most common cancers among young people.
  • Nearly 40% don't know that melanoma does not always begin as a mole.
  • 31% of Dutch respondents are unaware skin cancer is the fastest-growing cancer worldwide.
