Aston University Study: Deadly Bacteria Found in 90% of Makeup Products and Beauty Blenders

The vast majority of in-use makeup products—including beauty blenders, mascara, and lip gloss—are contaminated with potentially life-threatening bacteria, according to new research from Aston University experts.

Makeup used by millions daily harbors dangerous bacteria like E. coli and Staphylococcus because most items are rarely cleaned and kept well past their expiration dates, the study reveals.

Bacteria that can trigger illnesses from skin infections to life-threatening sepsis were detected in nine out of ten products, posing heightened risks near the eyes, mouth, cuts, or scrapes—especially for immunocompromised individuals vulnerable to opportunistic infections.

Beauty blenders showed the highest contamination levels: 93% had never been cleaned, and 64% had been dropped on the floor during use.

This is the first study examining these popular makeup sponges for blending foundation and contour. Researchers at Aston University found they are highly prone to bacterial growth when left damp after use, creating ideal breeding conditions.
