Adhesive tape has long been a beauty staple for perfecting winged eyeliner, and now it's gaining traction for a surprising anti-aging purpose: face taping. This technique involves strategically applying strips of tape to sagging areas to create a temporary face lift, left on for several hours. Dr. Ioannis Liaka, Medical Director at Vie Aesthetics, shared with Refinery29 that "the goal is to contract the muscles and limit their movement." He positions it as a "night ritual," explaining that sleeping with tape helps "prevent eyebrows from frowning or forming expressions."
The trend's popularity has prompted cosmetic brands to launch specialized lift patches. Yet, dermatologists express caution about its true effectiveness. Some warn it may produce the opposite effect, accelerating wrinkles. "Taping the face to restrict muscles during sleep doesn't stop them from working—it adds resistance, training muscles to get stronger and hastening fine lines and wrinkles," experts note. Risks include allergies to adhesives, causing irritation, redness, or rashes. In severe cases, it could even tear off skin layers. Always patch-test first.
