We've often heard that men age more gracefully. Yet, a new study reveals that men actually develop wrinkles earlier than women.
Differences Between Men and Women
Men not only get wrinkles sooner but also more of them initially. After age 75, women catch up and may end up with even more. Wrinkles form in different areas—for example, women tend to have more on the upper lip, likely due to variations in skin structure.
Risk Factors
Several factors accelerate wrinkle formation, including smoking and sun exposure. A low BMI is also associated with more wrinkles, as a layer of subcutaneous fat can make them less deep.
Fair Skin
Research indicates that people with fair skin are less prone to wrinkles—possibly because they use more protective skincare. However, they are more susceptible to pigmentation spots, another hallmark of skin aging. While aging is inevitable, it manifests differently on every skin type.
