Amsterdam Hartenstraat becomes the first fur-free shopping street in Europe

After consultation with Bont voor Dieren, the 19 entrepreneurs of the Amsterdam shopping street Hartenstraat have decided to remove all fur from their range. The Hartenstraat has thus become the first fur-free shopping street in Europe. An official street sign was unveiled today with the text 'Fur-free shopping street.'

Well-known clothing brands in Hartenstraat such as COS and Marc O'Polo already had a fur-free policy, but in a few other stores fur from animals that are bred and killed only for their fur, such as minks, rabbits and foxes, were still sold. Bont voor Dieren has provided these clothing companies with information about animal suffering in the fur industry. Ultimately, all entrepreneurs, including the Amsterdam branch of Karl Lagerfeld, decided to remove the fur from their store. It is now the first time that a complete shopping street has gone fur-free.
